They are creating sisterns in Africa, Save The Rain:
http://www.savetherain.org/blog/

To quote "We educate people to farm the water through roof water collection, surface water collection, ground water recharge, soil conservation, bio-remediation and passive irrigation practices. We chose rain catchment because when 1 inch of rain falls on a 1000 square foot surface, you can collect 600 gallons of water."

How awesome is that. We will try to do this in Puerto Princesa, Palawan when we build our own home. At least now there is a formula to follow.

Sustainable living for the Philippines

This Luneta idea to beautify and make comfortable an open space for people to relax in, came from Carlos Celdran, I have just expanded the technology available for this and other projects as well as blathering on other compatible ideas.

Luneta could become the shinning green or eco-sustainable garden example.. visitors could be taken on a tour or course that would teach them to do the same in their own communities. If such services were available and printed or online materials people can download for visitors to bring away with them, then an admittance fee would be worth it to most, although a "green" free area should be made available to other who might not have the money for entrance to the course.
This water system could sustain the gardens around the Luneta. Gardens that could be also edible, and harvesting/replanting events could be planned to benefit the people who maintain the water and garden. The food harvested would allow the continued sustainability of the resident caretakers, cost effective as well.

I would like to create a rain harvesting system that can go into the poorest of neighborhoods..that would be cost effective to present to the appropriate Non profits and also government sections or general public. With corporate and govt funding, it could be possible.
Even G (Gawad Kalinga etc.) communities would benefit from this system of water harvesting and storage.

The problem is creating a harvesting/storage system that would be innocuous or even possibly aesthetically pleasing.

These are just some of my ideas for earth and life friendly living practices.
Our national problem is ignorance of these ideas or principals. as our poor are concerned only with their belly's at any given moment. We have to teach them that with proper use of our natural resources they need not live in squalor waiting for a hand out. The problem is lack of good education to our youth geared towards solving these problems on a day to day basis.
Teaching our students how to recycle in a sustainable fashion at school would be practical at this time. They would bring this practical knowledge home to benefit their families and neighbors.
We have to outreach in a pro-active fashion to help our nation's underprivileged population empower themselves by being self sufficient. Many just don't know any better and they have to be introduced to the ideas and practices, or we are doomed as a nation. We can even practice the methods individually in our own daily lives by teaching those helpers or companions in our own homes. Change starts with all of us, at home; at work etc. as individuals.

We have to stop sounding good, and start putting more effort into practicing what we preach.
These are some of my ideas to create a better Philippines. Together, as we have done here, we can make this a better Philippines and with a more informed, responsible citizenry.
If we empower those in need to create a beater world with sustainable practices, then we will have a less stressed population. We might, as a nation go back to the days of Bayanihan.

Diana
